Mia Ben David

Just Look Right

The exhibition explores the wound that emerges from the tension between apathy and empathy. As I confront this intersection, I want to flee. Looking only at the pastoral fragment of nature that remains in the crack between the ruins and the building, narrowing my eyes and focus on what is left, Using what I’ve got to build as pleasant reality as possible, but discovers that the outcome is based on rotting foundations. Finding myself walking on the ledge, comfortably numb.
In a space of flamboyant aesthetics a beautiful yet faraway, apocalyptic and cynical landscapes takes shape. Inviting for a stroll between the personal and the political.

Production: Shira Marek
Crew: Shai Segal, Aviv Keshet, Yael Shpinat

Advisors: Guy Gutman, Sali Haftel, Gabi Kricheli
Co-creator of video work: Meshi Cohen

By Virtue of the Same Movement

“The only being capable of dedicating himself to the very highest moral and ethical values requires for this purpose a phylogenetically adapted mechanism of behaviour whose animal properties bring with them the danger that he will kill his brother, convinced that he is doing so in the interests of these very same high values. Ecce homo!”
(On Aggression, Konrad Lorenz)

Against the Romance of Community

A blink of hovering, of latitude, of outbreak .Nothing is certain but uncertainty. Images are images, they need no narrative. Snapshots in which time lost its meaning.
Something breaks, something else isn’t there yet. And in-between the feeling that everything is possible. Dissolving identities. It’s a fight. And while we try to understand our surroundings, we forget what we are looking for. I am looking from above, I am looking from within. We are dreaming of a utopian place but we know it will never exist. And we give ourselves to this delusion while we wonder what or who is this “we“ we are talking about. I see you. I see you. I see you, yes, I do.

Cum

My work, “Cum”, is dealing with the subject of night life and the gay community, and with the question of sexuality as a value of paramount importance in this community.
My attitude towards the performers as sexual objects, not as people, is typical to pornography and the club scene. I am providing a glance into the dark rooms, in which there is a very clear division between predator and prey.
The way boundaries are being broken in one second, sexual harassment as a part of the routine, and us, as viewers, legitimizing sexual harassment, weather we are a part of the situation or just by-standers.
The bending of gender rules, the contrast between a live object and a virtual object, and referring to the audience as performers – are all confronting the viewers with ethical questions regarding the concrete reality and the reality of the performance.
A special thanks to my artistic advisor, Omer Sheizaf, and the producer, Noa Halfi.
Performers: Daniel Orr Enoch Melzer Daniels

Gentle men

A year ago I broke down in new tears.
I calmed myself down:
I feel good but it's complicated!"
Ever since that crying,
The floor is the same floor
The window is the same window
Our face is the same face
And in the space we move in an attempt to understand:
What kind of men are we?

Guidance: Gai Sherf
Performers: Omri Gaigar. Harel Wahnich
Production: Anat Handelsman

Light design: Shai Dror

Already Dead

And it’s not going to stop
It will stay the same, forever
Time will pass, and for moments
It will seem that things
Are changing
Moving
Flowing
Vibrating
Blood is running (vigorously) through all the right veins,
Sharp and vivid
But these moments will end

And this feeling will split and break
Into small, unbearable, elusive fragments
Of this memory.

And it’s not going to stop

Aurora

The years lie in between the layers of skin.
The ages lie in between the layers of the Earth.
At the center there is a light or boiling lava, a soft and independent core,
whose ripples form its body.
Aurora is a visual art work for the stage that takes place between the heavens and the earth.
It looks quizzically at the way we and all the things around us are formed and at the same time do not stop moving.
The piece invites us to spend time together in the endless formation process of things, to form intimacy with it and with its components.

i woodlike

All I ask is that you step with me into the boundlessness of open realtime, where constant change and infinite emptiness reign.
And just imagine that in between the flashing lights around us, everywhere is a sonorous silence and a dense darkness. At first we don't notice the events we are witnessing.
What is happening? Can you feel it?

Are the walls going to march off? Will Heaven fall upon us? Will the Earth open under us?
We don't know. But no need to fear, it's not over.
This is a constructed reality.
This is a place of peace and security.
It’s not a competition. We already like you.
Whatever happens in the other spheres -
it does not concern us.
Look, I can almost touch your skin.
Take it in. This might be as good as it gets.
Losing a fantasy is much harder than losing a reality.

Gentle men

A year ago I broke down in new tears.
I calmed myself down:
I feel good but it's complicated!"
Ever since that crying,
The floor is the same floor
The window is the same window
Our face is the same face
And in the space we move in an attempt to understand:
What kind of men are we?

Already Dead

And it’s not going to stop
It will stay the same, forever
Time will pass, and for moments
It will seem that things
Are changing
Moving
Flowing
Vibrating
Blood is running (vigorously) through all the right veins,
Sharp and vivid
But these moments will end

And this feeling will split and break
Into small, unbearable, elusive fragments
Of this memory.

And it’s not going to stop

I hear the cars outside ... are they dangerous? No.
A train passes by... is it dangerous? Not right now.
A baby is crying... is he dangerous? No.
What else do I hear?
Breathing right behind me.
I'm in danger.

The Circus is Coming

A circus show created and directed by Israel Erlanger

After I invented the wheel,
I was consumed by an overwhelming feeling of emptiness,
and so I turned to the circus.
But in this field too, I was not among the brightest ones.

Inviting for a stroll between the personal and the political.

Welcome to my stage. You have given me the power.
to control the truth, to enact laws,
to dominate, to annex history and planes,
to fracture familiar landscapes, to juggle material bodies.

No man can completely avoid dreaming of magnificent destruction.
